But with God above it all, and eternity before Him, the whole face of nature is changed.
Which, my friend, is the more probable — your theory or mine ?
I simply cannot swallow such a monstrous assumption as that moral beings like men are justified in cursing the present order of things, while close at their very feet lies a door leading to a perfect moral solution of our difficulty.

    2. It is a terrible world if the sufferings in it produce no good. It is some evil contrivance, made in order to torment people in spirit and in body. If that is so, the world is unspeakably immoral, since it does evil not for the sake of future good, but idly, to no end. It seems to lure people on deliberately, only so that they may suffer. It strikes us from our birth, mixes bitterness into every cup of happiness, and makes death an ever-threatening horror. And of course, if there is no God and no immortality, the loathing for life that people express is understandable: it is called forth in them by the existing order, or rather disorder — by a terrible moral chaos, as it ought to be called.

But only let there be a God above us and eternity before us, and everything changes. We discern good in evil, light in darkness, and hope drives away despair.

Which, then, of the two suppositions is the more probable? Can we admit that moral beings — people — have been placed under the necessity of justly cursing the existing order of the world, when there is a way out before them that resolves their contradiction? They must curse the world and the day of their birth if there is no God and no future life. But if, on the contrary, there are both, life in itself becomes a good, and the world a place of moral perfecting and of the endless increase of happiness and holiness.
