Разум указывает людям их отступления от закона жизни. Но отступления эти так привычны людям и кажутся так приятны, что люди стараются заглушить разум, чтобы он не мешал им жить так, как они привыкли.
Reason points out to people their departures from the law of life. But these departures are so habitual to people, and seem so pleasant, that people try to stifle reason, so that it will not hinder them from living as they are used to living.
1. И спасенье и казнь человека в том, что, когда он живет неправильно, он может себя затуманивать, чтобы не видать бедственности своего положения.
1. Both our salvation and our punishment lie in this: that when we live wrongly, we can befog ourselves so as not to see how wretched our position is.
2. Если жизнь не приходится по совести, то одурманиванием совесть сгибается по жизни.

3. Когда солдаты стоят в прикрытии под выстрелами и им делать нечего, они старательно изыскивают себе занятия для того, чтобы легче переносить опасность. И все люди порой представляются такими солдатами, спасающимися от жизни: кто честолюбием, кто картами, кто писанием законов, кто женщинами, кто играми, кто лошадьми, кто охотой, кто вином, кто государственными делами.
3. When soldiers stand under fire as a covering force and have nothing to do, they diligently seek out occupations for themselves, so as to bear the danger more easily. And at times all people seem to be such soldiers, escaping from life: some by ambition, some by cards, some by writing laws, some by women, some by games, some by horses, some by hunting, some by wine, some by affairs of state.
4. Трудно себе представить то благотворное изменение, которое произошло бы во всей жизни людской, если бы люди перестали одурманивать и вместе с тем отравлять себя водкой, вином, табаком, опиумом.
4. It is hard to imagine the beneficent change that would take place in the whole of human life if people stopped stupefying, and at the same time poisoning, themselves with vodka, wine, tobacco, and opium.
5. Рассказывают про последователей одной секты, что они в конце собраний тушат свет, чтобы предаваться разврату.
В нашем обществе для того, чтобы предаваться постоянному разврату, не переставая тушат свет разума одуряющими веществами.
5. It is told of the followers of a certain sect that at the end of their meetings they put out the light in order to give themselves up to debauchery.
In our society, in order to give themselves up to constant debauchery, people never stop putting out the light of reason with stupefying substances.
6. Одно из главных условий улучшения жизни людей нашего времени — это освобождение себя от того внушения, под которым они находятся, а между тем они не переставая старательно поддерживают себя в этом состоянии табаком, вином, водкой.
6. One of the chief conditions for bettering the lives of the people of our time is that they free themselves from the suggestion under which they find themselves; and meanwhile they never stop diligently keeping themselves in this state with tobacco, wine, and vodka.
7. То, что правительство берет на себя обязанность поставлять, с выгодой для себя, развращающий и убивающий душу и тело людей алкоголь, самым очевидным образом показывает, если бы и не было на то других доказательств, то, что правительство не только не заботится, как оно утверждает, о нравственности и благе народа, а, напротив, самым очевидным образом вредит ему для выгоды людей, составляющих правительство.
7. That the government takes upon itself the duty of supplying, at a profit to itself, the alcohol that corrupts and kills people’s souls and bodies shows most plainly, even were there no other proofs of it, that the government not only does not care, as it claims, for the morality and the good of the people, but on the contrary most plainly harms them for the profit of those who make up the government.
8. Одурманение себя чем бы то ни было хотя не есть еще преступление, но есть уже приготовление себя ко всякого рода преступлениям.
8. To stupefy oneself with anything at all is not yet a crime, but it is already to prepare oneself for crimes of every kind.
9. Порочность и, главное, бессмысленность жизни людей нашего времени происходит преимущественно от постоянного состояния опьянения, в которое они себя приводят. Непьяные люди не могли бы делать и малой доли того, что делается теперь в нашем мире.
9. The viciousness and, above all, the senselessness of the lives of the people of our time come chiefly from the constant state of intoxication into which they bring themselves. Sober people could not do even a small part of what is being done now in our world.
Вы говорите, что нет никакой важности в том, чтобы пить или не пить, курить или не курить. Если нет важности, то что же стоит вам перестать, когда вы знаете про тот вред, который вы делаете этим и себе и другим своим примером?
You say that it makes no difference whether you drink or not, smoke or not. If it makes no difference, then what does it cost you to stop, when you know the harm you do by it, both to yourself and to others by your example?
