Thou shalt not kill refers not only to the killing of human beings, but to the killing of every living thing. And this commandment was written in the human heart before it was heard on Sinai.

    1. However persuasive the arguments against a slaughter-free diet, a human being cannot help feeling pity and revulsion at the killing of a sheep or a chicken, and most people will always prefer to forgo the pleasure and benefit of meat rather than do this killing themselves.

    2. “But if we must pity sheep and rabbits, then we must pity wolves and rats as well,” say the enemies of vegetarianism. “We do pity them, and we try to pity them,” the vegetarians answer, “and we look for means other than killing against the harm they do, and such means are found. And if you say the same of insects, then although we feel no immediate pity for them (Lichtenberg says that our pity for animals is directly proportional to their size), we think that pity can be felt for them too (as Silvio Pellico felt it for a spider), and that means other than killing can be found against them as well.”

“But plants are living beings too, and you destroy their life,” the opponents of vegetarianism say further. But this very argument best defines the essence of vegetarianism and points to the means of meeting its demands. Ideal vegetarianism is a diet of fruit, that is, of the covering of the seed, which holds life within it: apples, peaches, watermelons, pumpkins, berries. Hygienists recognize this food as the most healthful, and in eating it a person destroys no life. It is significant, too, that the pleasant taste of fruits, the coverings of seeds, brings it about that people, in picking and eating the fruits, spread them over the earth and multiply them.

    3. As enlightenment advances and population grows, people pass from eating human beings to eating animals, from eating animals to a diet of grains and roots, and from this way of eating to the most natural diet of all, fruit.

    4. The seizure of great stretches of land by large owners has made fruit a luxury. The more evenly the land is distributed, the more fruit is grown.

I have said enough, I think, to induce you to bear with me in the statement of my main theorem--that reading and writing are in no sense education, unless they contribute to this end of making us feel kindly towards all creatures; but that drawing, and especially physiologic drawing, is vital education of a most precious kind.

The unreasonableness, the unlawfulness and the harm, moral and material, of eating meat have lately become so plain that meat-eating is upheld now not by reasoning but only by the suggestion of long usage, by tradition, by custom. And so in our time there is no longer any need to prove the unreasonableness of meat-eating, plain as it is to all. It is coming to an end of itself.
