We can fulfill our calling in sickness just as well as in health.
1. If we did not doubt the indestructibility of our life after death, all illnesses would seem to us only an approach to the passage from one life to another — a passage more desirable than undesirable — and then we would bear the pain of illness just as we bear the pain of straining at labor that, we know, will end well. In times of pain we would have an explanation of what is happening to us, and would prepare for a new state.
2. It is usually thought that one can serve God and be useful to people only in health. Not true! Often it is the reverse. Christ served God and people most of all when he was at the point of death on the cross, when he forgave those who were killing him. Every sick person can do the same. And no one can say which state, health or sickness, is better suited to the service of God and people.
3. Ever since people began to think, they have recognized that nothing does so much for people’s moral life as remembering death. But the art of medicine, wrongly directed, instead of seeing to the relief of suffering, makes it its aim to deliver people from death, and teaches them to hope for deliverance from death and for putting the thought of death away from themselves, and so deprives people of the chief incentive to a moral life.
4. Only for ourselves, to serve ourselves, do we need more health and strength; to serve God we not only do not need them, but often — the reverse.
5. How often, in dealing with the sick, we forget that what the sick need most is not that their approaching death be hidden from them, but, on the contrary, that they be called to the consciousness of their spiritual, growing divine nature, which is subject neither to diminution nor to death.
Illnesses, in destroying bodily strength, almost always set free the strength of the spirit. And for those who have carried their consciousness over into the spiritual realm, illnesses do not take away their good; on the contrary, they increase it.
